Life With Pets, Pet Portraits

Everyone has photos of their pets after all they become part of the family to the point of taking on the role of a child.

We start going on shopping sprees for “basic items” and usually get to the counter and when the total amount comes up, the blood drains from our faces and its one of those “Oops I overspent” then we tell ourselves that he or she’s worth it.

We love our pets and they give us unconditional love and affection, They don’t care about if we’re unemployed or a CEO of a company, live on the streets or a million dollar mansion, gay or straight, what colour our skin is or how crap our day went.

Unlike photos that can fade, be blurred or something else in the photo can distract the person looking at our pet, a pet portrait will be only focused on your pet. It can be so realistic that you can feel the fur and especially in portraits of cats the eyes will follow the person around the room.

In the case of when the pet dies which is heartbreaking a portrait of the pet that you have just lost can be a memento of how your pet was, the strange but unique way he or she looked, the way the fur lay that strange way and would never sit the way you wanted it to.

It a personal way of remembering your pet and will bring back memories and emotions and through the emotions you learn how to smile again.

We all buy art of some description, it brightens up our walls, gives our homes a unique, personal individual touch that says to visitors what inspires us, what kind of person we are, our likes and dislikes.

How many homes have we gone into and looked around their pictures and photos on their walls and tables. Its a conversation starting point and an insight into other peoples lives.

If we have portraits our our kids and our pets that we adore are like our kids then why don’t we have portrait of our pets after all they are like our kids and part of the family and at times we would get rid of our partners before we would get rid of our pet.

Tips For Buying Discount Pet Medications Online

Let’s face it – we spend a lot of money on our pets. They deserve the best care we can provide as members of our family. Veterinary care for pets has advanced significantly in recent years as have medications to prevent disease and parasites, and to stop the pain of arthritis or surgery.

Changes in veterinary care reflect the importance we place on family pets today. For many years dogs were spayed and sent home without any provision for pain. Today, it is routine for your veterinarian to provide Rimadyl for dogs, Metacam or Deramaxx to ease pain and stiffness after surgery or from arthritis.

Pet owners can save a significant amount of money by purchasing pet supplies, supplements and medicines online. Initially, many vets were reluctant to transfer prescriptions for owners wanting to buy pet meds elsewhere. This was mainly due to a fear that the medicine received would not be the quality intended or might be a cheaper imitation that could potentially harm the pet.

Buying pet meds online is now a widely accepted practice. Sites that sell discounted pet medicines now offer to call your veterinarian to obtain your prescription or provide a number for you to fax the prescription to the site administrator. With a few basic precautions, pet owners can feel safe ordering pet meds online. The tips below will ensure you receive the exact medicine your pet needs from a seller you can trust.

Visit your veterinarian

Clearly, if you need prescriptive meds for your dog or cat, you need a checkup and diagnosis before purchasing meds. However, even some non-prescriptive supplements can have side effects so it’s wise to ask your vet’s advice before adding those to your pet’s diet.

Don’t be embarrassed to tell your vet that you will be buying pet meds online. This is a common practice today and saving money is nothing to apologize for. Once he realizes you are carefully budgeting pet costs, your veterinarian may offer alternative or generic medications that can be substituted for high cost brands. It’s definitely worth asking about during your visit. Many sites offering discount pet meds carry both brand and generic versions.

Remember that your veterinarian is the expert on your pet’s health. Follow his pet med recommendations. Asking for a prescription for heartworm prevention medication without testing for heartworm or requesting a prescription for pain relief before your vet diagnoses the cause of the pain is not a safe way to medicate your dog.

Coordinate the transfer of your pet’s prescriptions to the online site.

It is possible that once he understands your need to buy online to save money, your vet may offer to match the online price for the medication. If not, he may be willing to call the prescription in to the site or may give you a name of someone in his office for the website to contact to get the prescription. Many vets will be willing to fax the prescription to the online site for you as well.

Choose an online pet medication site carefully

You cannot safely choose a pet meds provider based only on pricing. Not all pet meds sold online are the real product as the industry has many cheaply imported fakes and outdated products in circulation.

Your best choice is a site that is connected to a practicing veterinarian. When you choose a site owned and operated by a licensed veterinarian, you can be assured the products you buy are exactly what your vet prescribed for your dog or cat.

Tips for Holiday Travel With Your Pet

Most people travel for their holiday celebrations and they usually take their family with them. There are some that just can not live without their pets as well. If you intend to travel with your pet you have to plan ahead to make the journey pleasant and comfortable for both you and the animal.

· Traveling by Car

If you are going for a road trip for the holidays, make sure that you do not let the pet loose inside your vehicle. You can get your pet a safety harness that can be attached to your car's seat belt system. Or you can just put your pet in a cage. A pet carrier is also a good idea, but could be more expensive too. Always put your pet in the back seat.

· Traveling by Air

If you are flying to your destination, a pet carrier is a must to comply with airline regulations. Check with the airlines regarding the pet carrier dimensions to ensure that you will be buying the right-sized one. A pet can travel by air in the cabin if it does not exceed 22 pounds in weight, 18 inches in length and 11 inches tall.

For international traveling, you will need certain documents for your pet before you can take it with you. It would best if you can give at least 6 weeks permission to start taking care of the papers.

Do not travel with your pet unless you have it checked and vaccinated by the veterinarian. Always carry your pet's current health certificate along with the record of vaccinations.

· Pet Foods

Take plenty of pet foods; you can never be sure if your pets' favorite brand of pet foods will be available at your destination, so it is better to be sure.

· Feeding Instructions

If you are flying, feed your pet with a light snack 5 to 6 hours before departure. Do not give your pet any liquid 2 hours before departure. If you are going by the car, try not to feed your pet while you are moving.

· Put ID Tags

Whether you are taking your pet for domestic or international traveling, it is best if you can attach an ID tag to your pet. The ID tag must contain your home address and telephone number as well as your destination's address and telephone number.

Before you take off it is also important to check if your pet is going to be welcome at your destination. If you are visiting relatives, you need to let them know that you will be bringing your pet. If you are staying at a hotel, check about the accommodation's rules and regulations regarding pets.

Also make sure that your pet is travel-ready. Animals can be more fidgety than kids during long journeys. If your pet has never been anywhere else but home, you can start making him travel-ready by taking him to the supermarket, the park or at the mall.

Finally, try to be as patient as possible. You need to understand that you are not going to deal with your pet alone; you are also going to have to deal with other people's reaction to your pet.

Are Hamsters the Right Pet for Me?

Are hamsters the right pet for me?

This article will go through a few things that need to be considered before owning a hamster.

If you think that hamsters require a small space and they do not require a lot of time and care, then you are wrong.

If you think that all hamsters need is a cage, some food and water, and a wheel, then you are wrong again.

Hamsters are great pets. Not only do kids love them, adults love them too because of their cute appearance. However, they do require a lot of care. The more care you give, the stronger bond it is between you and your little friend.

Hamsters have short live spans

They live up to 2 years (if you are lucky, 2.5-3 years) so you will have to prepare yourself for an historic heartbreak. Due to the short lifespan, it is difficult to re-home a hamster. Consider carefully whenever you can commit to give your pets a good life before you take them home.

Do not buy a pet if you do not have the commitment. It is all too easy to leave them in a cage in the corner of the room and forget about them.

Dwarf or Giant Breed?

Dwarf hamsters and golden hamsters need to be looked after in slightly different ways.

Golden hamsters or Syrian hamsters are better for children because they are easier to handle and they are more friendly. They also tend to be more responsive to people.

The other smaller breeds (Russian Campbell, Roborovski etc.) are more difficult to handle and sometimes they bite.

Depending on what you want from your hamster, you will have to consider which breed you prefer.

Hamsters need plenty of exercise

They may be small but wild hamsters travel long distances during night time to find food. It's the same for your hamsters. Give them an exercise wheel and be aware that they will get addictive to the wheel. Remember to fill up their water bottle regularly to make sure that they do not run out of water.

Also get an exercise ball so you can let your hamster to run around inside the house. A hamster that sits in the cage all day is a very sad hamster.

Make sure you know what you are doing before getting a hamster . Get to understand more about these little fluffy friends and give them the care they need, and they will become your best pets and best friends in your life.

Moving Your Pet Safely

Moving creates a lot of stress to your pet so making sure that it gets the right treatment can keep it away from any danger and health hazards it can encounter before, on, and after you move.

Here are the things you should do in order to ensure you arrive at your destinations with your pet in perfect condition.

Before you move

Safety begins in planning – So if you are scheduled to move together with your pet, you have to plan carefully and plan early.

Buy or make a pet cage – The very first question you might ask is, "Would I put my pet in a cage or just use a restrainer?" A restrainer is okay, but if you want to make sure that your pet stays in one and secured place, then you should house it on a pet cage. Train your pet to get accustomed with the cage before the day of the move.

Schedule a veterinary visit – Car ride can cause a lot of distress to your pet. So making sure that it is healthy before you go is a must. Have your pet be checked by a veterinarian before you go.

Book a hotel accommodation – If you will travel for long hours by car, have your hotel accommodation ready. There are several hotels that might not allow pets inside so better make sure that you get this information. It is very stressful for a pet to travel for long hours. An overnight rest should break that stress.

Purchase a new pet ID tag – Let your pet wears a new ID tag once you know your new address. Include your new contact number. You can also consider an identification card inserted on your pet's collar different from the traditional dangling tag.

On the moving day

Bring water – Although some pets may drink any water when really thirsty, you still need to bring water that is equivalent to your pet's need. Prepare it on the day you move.

Secure your dog – It is a busy day for sure and you may not take notice of your dog while you arrange everything. To ensure that you find your pet when it is time to go, secure your pet on a place where it can not escape. It may be inside the cage or inside the bathroom.

Keeping Pets

Of all the animals on this earth, only human beings keep other animals as pets. None of the other animals keep pets. It sounds a bit strange but it is a fact.

Human beings keep many different types of pets, the most common ones being dogs and cats. Other pets include birds, guinea pigs, white mice, and rabbits. Then there are some really weird pets that people keep such as snakes and spiders.

Many house owners keep dogs to guard their homes as well as for company. I suspect the former is a more important criterion for keeping dogs. Dogs, being naturally inquisitive creatures, bark when they see something new or strange. They are natural early-warning devices. However, most dogs are friendly once they know that someone is not a threat. So it is common to see children and adults playing with their dogs. Their joy is obvious.

However dogs do need care. Regular meals, bath and grooming are essential so that they remain healthy. Otherwise, they tend to become mangy and surly. We can see this in the stray dogs that we come across sometimes.

Cats are natural predators. So they do keep the house they live in free of rats. However cats are not friendly as dogs. They usually keep themselves except when they want some attention.

My neighbor keeps pigeons. These birds are free to fly around as the please. They only return to their pigeon holes to eat and to spend the night. It seems easy keeping pigeons, but my neighbor says it is not so. Pigeons eat a lot. So he has to spend a considering sum of money buying seeds and peas for them to eat. There is another big problem with keeping pigeons and that is they leave their droppings all over the place. This is definitely a health hazard. I have mentioned this to my neighbor but he does not seem to care.

Another neighbor of mine keeps songs-birds. He has a couple of magpie-robins and about half a dozen of spotted doves. These birds can really sing. Every morning, their sweet singing wake me up. This is really a pleasure. I am sure my neighbor keeps these birds for the pleasure of their songs too. But like pigeons, they eat a lot and so this neighbor has to spend a large sum of money keeping them. These birds are not cheap either. They can cost hundreds of dollars each. Neverheless, my neighbor is very proud of his birds. It gives him pleasure and that, I suppose, is the main purpose of keeping pets.

I have seen people keeping guinea pigs, hamsters, fishes and rabbits as pets but these are not so common. Each animal has its special needs and not everyone knows how to look after them properly. I have not met anyone keeping snakes and tarantulas or other weird animals, but I have heard of them and seen them on the television. I wonder what pleasure they derive from these strange and dangerous pets. I wonder too how they look after them.

Anyhow I suppose each person has his or her won reasons for keeping pets, and as long as they look after their pets properly, it is all right.

Adopting A New Pet

Adopting a pet is a wonderful way to get a new pet. There are many pet adoption agencies throughout the United States. These agencies provide homes for pets who have been brought in from humane societies, animal rescues, and animal shelters. Some of these pets have been mistreated by their owners or have gotten lost and have not found their families.

Many pet adoption agencies are working over time to find a positive solution for America's dog over-population issue. These agencies work hard to find adoptable pets so they can be provided with loving and caring family homes.

Many agencies have websites where potential pet parents are able to search for possible pet candidates without having to go to the noisy and chaotic locales. On these websites, people are able to search for their preferred dog (or cat) breed, age, sex, size and even the specific organizations where the pet originally came from.

The pages list photos of the animals, their names, where they are from, and information about them, including pet preferences. Most of the lists say things like these: "Bingo is a fun-loving puppy who loves to cuddle on the couch. home with previous pet owners, in the north metro Atlanta area. "

If you are not interested in adopting a pet, but would love to help, most animal adoption agencies accept donations. They also love to have regular volunteers to help with things such as pet adoptions, fund raising events, administrative support, and marketing. Also, many programs seek people to simply come and play with the cats or dogs for an hour or so. This is especially helpful because many pets who have been homeless or mistreated in the past savor any time that is spent with loving humans.

Pet adoption agencies also provide help and support for families who have recently adopted, or who are seeking to adopt. They give advice on how to choose a dog that suits your family, house-training, separation anxiety, basic obedience techniques, introducing new pets to walking on a leash or adjusting to additional pets in the home.

There are many benefits to adopting previously owned pets. If you adopt, you are giving a cat or dog another chance at living in a happy home with committed parents. Many animals who have been adopted also tend to be more loving to their new families. Some may be tentative and cautious at first, but with time, you will have an adorable new pet who seems to realize you have saved him from his previous fate.

The satisfaction of knowing you have helped your local society by adopting a pet will be a great reward, not to mention obtaining a new pet who is perfect for your family. Adopting a pet is a lifelong commitment that would be hard to regret. These unfortunate pets need the chance to join loving families who will care for them. It's always an option: consider adoption.

Aging and Disabled Family Pets

If you have ever cared for a disabled, injured or sick dog, you know the heartbreak of seeing them struggle in pain while they continue to try to please you. In the case of an aging dog, their condition seems to go in cycles. They struggle and then they snap back for a while. Our family had a beautiful and gentle collie mix named Sadie. As she got older, she began to have noticeable difficulty due to joint problems. At first it was difficult getting up and down from a lying position. Then getting up stairs was a challenge. Ultimately the long walks got shifter.

Initially we accepted it and claimed it was part of the aging process and simply tried to accommodate her with a softer bed, fewer stairs and shorewalks. When we went to our vet for advice and he recommended that we supplement her diet with a high-quality antioxidant supplement. This worked great and she was back to her old self. Finally about three years later we began to see the same problems reappear. This time our vet added a prescription medication that we used in conjuction with the antioxidant.

Once again she got better but her condition got the best of her. She still got around but with great difficulty. We wanted to help her so we got creative and fashioned assistive devices out of household items and building materials. These included a make shift sling to help get her into the car and a ramp to help her get in and out the back door. She suffered into her old age with grace and dignity and always seemed grateful for our attempts to make her life happy, fun and less painful. For many other dogs with even more severe disabilities there are commercially made products to help you with the challenge of assisting them with issues of comfort and mobility as long as possible.

Ways to help your pet may include a sling to help them get up. Be sure to never try to lift (suspend) a dog using a sling around their middle. They need to be cradled when you lift them. However you can use the sling to help them use their own strength to make things easier. You can also fashion a smaller sling or harness to be used to assist them in walking. This sling is placed around them in front of the rear legs. If you are not feeling creative there are many websites that offer quality products that can do the job such as http://www.handicappedpets.com .

For some owners and their dogs, there are even greater challenges. Some family pets have suffered an injury or illness that has left them unable to walk. For these situations there are doggie wheelchairs. Most of the time when dogs use these devices, they drag their paws and need to wear protection on their feet. Again, these can be homemade or they can be purchased. There are many choices and you will need to closely evaluate your dog's specific need and "wear pattern" that is created when they drag their paws. Dogs actually adjust remarkably well to these assistive measures once they discover their new found mobility.

Whatever your dog's needs are, they appreciate your gentle concern and encouragement. If your pet is beginning to have signs of limited mobility, please seek the help of your veterinarian. There are wonderful, healthy, holistic products on the market that can help. Many products can be found on [http://www.healthydoghouse.com] that can even help in preventing discomfort and disease progress. Do not simply assume that their symptoms are a part of the aging process. They probably have many pain-free years ahead of them with the right intervention and nutritional supplements.

Enjoy your time together!
